About IIT Roorkee

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1960. It is, since then, engaged in providing the highest level of academic education in the country. The main focus of the teaching and research in the department are centered around interdisciplinary themes which have gained worldwide attention and appreciation. This department currently has a 27-member faculty with expertise in frontier areas of research. Active research in the areas of asymmetric synthesis, transition metal based catalysis, visible light photoredox catalysis, electrochemistry, mechanochemistry, organic functional materials, polymeric membranes, nanobio interfacial chemistry, nanomaterials, organotin compounds, bioinorganic chemistry, high energy density materials, ultrafast spectroscopy, nonlinear spectroscopy, quantum dots as sensors, energy harvesting, systems chemistry, active matter, artificial cells, computational catalysis, modelling and simulations, and other areas of theoretical chemistry are being pursued.
The faculty members have contributed towards the publication of over 10 books, hundreds of high-quality research papers and many patents in the last five years. There are about 20 research projects sponsored by various government organizations (MHRD, DST, CSIR, AICTE, DRDO, ISRO) and industries. The chief mission of the department is to generate human resource of excellent quality, including chemists with high professional competence in interdisciplinary research encompassing biology, chemistry, and physics, for national needs. One of the unique features of the post graduate education in the department is that it offers core courses in analytical chemistry and materials chemistry.


The department offers three programs:
2 year M.Sc. (admission through JAM);
5-years integrated M.Sc
(admission through JEE);
5-years BS-MS (admission through JEE); and PhD degree.
Two years M.Sc.
program also involves a compulsory research project for a semester, whereas the integrated MSc program involves a research project for one full year as partial fulfillment for the award of the degree. In this period, they gain experience to perform quality research in frontier areas.
The department is equipped with state-of-art instruments known and required to carry out the modern day chemistry. The students are provided a comprehensive practical exposure to various instrumental techniques required for their research.
